It depends on the point of view.
Whether 2011 will merely be seen as another crisis year or the beginning of an opportunity for real change is certainly influenced by an individual’s personal situation. What is indeed true is that never before have so many people worldwide made their voices heard in protest as in 2011. And this despite growing global prosperity. The reasons and content of the protests are varied, but they only partially relate to the wealth issue: corruption, lack of transparency, lack of freedom, unfair distribution of wealth, election fraud, lack of access and right to education, lack of self-determination, superiority of the financial sector, environmental overexploitation. What the protests have in common are the unbalanced, short-term and unilateral actions of systems and stakeholders. And it is especially young and well-educated people from the middle class who are raising their voices.
Sustainable economic activity will therefore be the key issue in the coming years. A new element in this is that sustainable development places the emphasis on new aspects such as ethics, environmental protection and social commitment. These are issues that will be essential for assessing businesses and individuals in future. This means that acting on the PR slogan ‘Do good and talk about it’ will become a mandatory exercise for companies. From this point of view, 2012 can become a new opportunity to bring about real and lasting changes for a better future for coming generations. I wish you a year 2012 based on stability and sustainability.
